— Story of RAI

The name RAI (Responsible AI) was chosen because it captures the principles that guide our research while drawing on several interconnected meanings of the Japanese pronunciation rai (らい). The character 雷 (rai) means thunder, symbolizing the extraordinary power, speed, and transformative force of modern artificial intelligence. The character 来 (rai) means to come or the future, reflecting our commitment to shaping the next generation of intelligent systems and anticipating their long-term effects on society. The character 頼 (rai) conveys the ideas of trust, reliability, and dependability, which lie at the heart of responsible AI research.

Together, these meanings express a single vision: AI should possess the power to transform the world, the wisdom to build a better future, and the trustworthiness to serve humanity responsibly. The RAI laboratory brings these principles together through research on transparency, accountability, safety, alignment, fairness, and human-centered AI systems.
